Ways To Make a Great First Impression

Image
Genuine smiles are a winning ticket for creating a great first impression, as is a firm handshake and purposeful eye contact. It has often been said that, “You only get one chance to make a first impression.” Whether you are networking, interviewing for a job or meeting new colleagues for the first time,  when you meet someone for the first time, they are taking a rapid inventory of your gait, your smile, your handshake, and how you present yourself. As you are making your approach, they are also deciding if they can trust you, if you are genuinely nice, if they want to know and work with you, so many questions are answered in those first few critical seconds based on what they see, and how you make them feel. Here are some guidelines to keep in mind which will make a good first impression. 1. Be mindful of how you appear to others From head to toe, you want to be sure that you are portraying the image that presents you in the best possible light. Prepare yourself w...

LIKE BOKO HARAM; LIKE MAITATSINE. NIGERIA'S RELIGIOUS TERROR OF THE 80'S

Image
This piece is written in honour of and dedicated to the memory of hardworking, innocent and defenceless Nigerian citizens who lost their lives in the spate of senseless religious killings in the country. It is my prayer and hope that their deaths will never be in vain and that one day, we will all come back to our senses, work together for peace and realize that after everything, we end up buried in the same soil of the same earth and consumed by the same worms that know no religion.  It was 33 years ago, the 18th of December, 1980 to be precise. A Fulani teacher named Shehu Shagari was the first civilian executive Nigerian President but the nation he was leading was in flames, set alight by an energetic man who spoke high-pitched Fulani. The security forces were helpless and even the Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces seemed confused blaming external forces that he said were ‘jealous of Nigeria’s growing international influence’. The violence, the h...

Mysteries of the Deep

Image
The ocean is a great mystery unto itself. Diving deep down to the ocean floor you never know what alien creatures you may meet or what pirate treasures you may find. Over the centuries the ocean has given rise to an immense number of bewildering and puzzling mysteries, myths and legends. People are still trying to solve the ancient secrets that the ocean has been hiding. What’s inside the Bermuda Triangle? What happened to the lost city of Atlantis? How to explain the phenomenon of the “Milky Sea”? The scientists began to study the oceans intensively only in the second half of the 20th century. Many scholars argue that the depth of the oceans has been studied less intensively than the dark side of the moon. Experts familiar with exploration of the seas think only 2-5% of our underwater world has been explored thoroughly. But in that 2-5% we have a lot of interesting mysteries that need to be revealed. Let’s look through the top 10 of the most unbelievable oc...

CROSS-POLLINATION!

Image
There was a farmer who grew excellent quality corn. Every year he won the award for the best grown corn in the locality. A particular year a newspaper reporter interviewed him to learn something interesting about how he was able to attain the goal. The reporter discovered that the farmer usually share his seedlings with his neighbours. “How can you afford to share your best seed corn with your neighbours when they enter into competition with yours each year?” the reporter asked. “Why sir,” said the farmer, “Didn’t you know? “The wind picks up pollen from the ripening corn and swirls it from field to field. If my neighbours grow inferior corn, cross-pollination will steadily degrade the quality of my corn. If I am to grow good corn, I must help my neighbours grow good corn. My shared story this week can reflect our lives. We need to do an appraisal on what gives true satisfaction in life. If we truly want to live fulfilled, we must be eager ...
