Oscar Pistorius 'Spent £1MILLION On Legal Fees During His Murder Trial

Image
Oscar Pistorius spent nearly £1million defending himself in his murder trial - with nearly half the bill still unpaid, it emerged today. The athlete is believed to have paid his legal team as much as £5,400 a day to fight the charge that he murdered his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp during his seven-month trial. But sources close to the Paralympian's legal team said his lawyers were forced to represent him for free for the last two months because he had run out of money. It is believed the runner, who once earned £300,000 a year from sponsorship alone, still owes around R10m (£560,000) from a total bill of R17m (£995,000). The debt has raises questions about who might defend the disgraced athlete if state prosecutors appeal the decision to acquit him of murder, which must be made by November 4. The family are understood to be disputing the bill, with one source saying there was 'definitely great unhappiness' about the fees. Pistorius’s uncle...

Ebola’s evolutionary roots more ancient than previously thought, study finds

Image
The family of viruses housing Ebola and Marburg is ancient, and the two viruses last shared a common ancestor millions of years ago, scientists say The research shows that filoviruses — a family to which Ebola and its similarly lethal relative, Marburg, belong — are at least 16-23 million years old. Filoviruses likely existed in the Miocene Epoch, and at that time, the evolutionary lines leading to Ebola and Marburg had already diverged, the study concludes. The research was published in the journal PeerJ in September. It adds to scientists’ developing knowledge about known filoviruses, which experts once believed came into being some 10,000 years ago, coinciding with the rise of agriculture. The new study pushes back the family’s age to the time when great apes arose. “Filoviruses are far more ancient than previously thought,” says lead researcher Derek Taylor, PhD, a University at Buffalo professor of biological sciences. “These things hav...

What Would You Do If You Came Home To Find 102 Snakes In Your Home?

Image
Earlier this week, a family in Saskatchewan, Canada got the surprise of a lifetime when they came home to find their house invaded by snakes. Somehow, over 100 garter snakes found their way inside the family's home. The snakes were looking to escape the plunging temperatures outside and begin hibernating for the winter. I'm not sure I could think of a worse place for a snake to hibernate. I feel bad for the poor family. Even though these are harmless snakes, this would freak me  out. I don't want my house to be invaded by things that creep or crawl. No thank you very much .
