The governing body released on Monday a list of 23 names being considered for the prize, reported by FIFA.com: A shortlist of the final three candidates will be announced before the eventual winner is crowned on Jan. 12, 2015. Ronaldo is gunning to retain the trophy for the first time in his career with a third overall win, while Messi will be looking to become the first-ever player to win five Ballon d’Or trophies. All club and international performances are counted through the calendar year of 2014. This means the World Cup is likely to be an important factor in the vote. A total of 184 national coaches and captains plus 173 members of the media named their top three last year, with this season’s vote taking on the same formula. As noted by FIFA‘s breakdown of the 2013 vote, each time

Pope Francis declares evolution and Big Bang theory are right and God isn't 'a magician with a magic wand'

Image
The theories of evolution and the Big Bang are real and God is not “a magician with a magic wand”, Pope Francis has declared. Speaking at the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, the Pope made comments which experts said put an end to the “pseudo theories” of creationism and intelligent design that some argue were encouraged by his predecessor, Benedict XVI. Francis explained that both scientific theories were not incompatible with the existence of a creator – arguing instead that they “require it”. “When we read about Creation in Genesis, we run the risk of imagining God was a magician, with a magic wand able to do everything. But that is not so,” Francis said. He added: “He created human beings and let them develop according to the internal laws that he gave to each one so they would reach their fulfilment. “The Big Bang, which today we hold to be the origin of the world, does not contradict the intervention of the divine creator but, rather, requires it. “Evolution in nature is not in

EBOLA: THE RACE TO FINDING A VACCINE.

Image
Researchers in Canada, Britain, the US and Mali are testing drugs they hope will stop the humanitarian disaster unfolding in west Africa – and prevent Ebola becoming as prolific as HIV. In 1959 the French microbiologist René Dubos gazed into his crystal ball and found reasons to be concerned. In his lifetime Dubos had witnessed the steady decline of diseases such as diphtheria, tuberculosis and polio, but rather than giving him confidence these medical successes filled him with foreboding. Though vaccines and therapeutic drugs had neutralised many of the threats of the past, he warned that humans could not escape the microbes that transmitted infectious diseases, because they were part of the environment and our ecology. Complete freedom from infectious disease was a mirage, he warned. “At some unpredictable time and in some unforeseeable manner nature will strike back.” The Ebola outbreak is arguably just such a riposte, shattering western dreams of medical utopias.

Twitter reports soaring revenues but struggles to recruit new users

Share price drops 10% on third-quarter results that show Twitter added only 13 million new users and remains unprofitable Twitter’s share price dropped 10% in after-hours trading on Monday amid continuing signs of slowing growth at the social media company. Results released on Monday for the third quarter of the year show Twitter’s revenues soared to $361m, up 114% from the same period last year, beating expectations. But the number of monthly active users of the service grew just 13 million to 284 million from the previous quarter. Analysts had predicted growth would between 14 million and 17 million. The number of monthly active users represents a 23% increase year on year but was up just 4.8% from the last set of results and below the 6.3% quarter-on-quarter growth it reported in the second quarter. The company has shaken up management and begun changing its platform in order to make it more accessible to new users. During the quarter it updated its service on

Washington high school gunman invited victims to lunch by text message

Investigators say five students were all at a lunch table when they were shot by Jaylen Fryberg in attack that killed two A popular student responsible for a shooting at a Washington state high school on Friday invited his victims to lunch by text message, then shot them at their table, investigators said on Monday. Sheriff Ty Trenary said at a news conference that the five students were at a lunch table when they were shot by 15-year-old Jaylen Fryberg. Fryberg then killed himself. Detectives are digging through reams of text messages, phone and social media records as part of an investigation that could take months, Trenary said. “The question everybody wants is, ‘Why?’” Trenary said. “I don’t know that the ‘why’ is something we can provide.” Fryberg, a football player who was named a prince on the school’s homecoming court one week before the killings, was a member of a prominent Tulalip Indian Tribes family. He seemed happy although he was also upset about a g

Dilma Rousseff pledges unity after narrow Brazil election victory

Image
President Dilma Rousseff has struck a conciliatory tone after her victory in the closest Brazilian election in generations. Rousseff was re-elected by a narrow margin on Sunday, ensuring that Latin America’s biggest nation will remain under the control of a Workers party (PT) committed to tackling inequality. She won 51.6% of the valid votes cast to secure a much reduced mandate, having fought off a strong challenge by the pro-business Aécio Neves. In a victory speech, a beaming Rousseff said she hoped the nation could rally together. “Instead of increasing differences and creating gaps, I strongly hope that we create the conditions to unite,” she told supporters in Brasilia. “I want to be a much better president than I have been until now.” She gave particular thanks to former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who many tip to run again in 2018. Rousseff is ineligible to stand for a third consecutive term. Brazil’s stock exchange lost six points early on Monday,

Read Heart felt letter written by Iranian woman before she was hanged.

27 year old Reyhaney Jabbari was executed on Saturday October 25th by hanging in Iran seven years after she killed a man that she claimed had attempted to rape her. Before she was killed, Reyhaney wrote a very emotional letter to her mother, asking that her organs be donated to those who need them. The full text of the letter was translated by the National Council of Resistance of Iran: Dear Sholeh, today I learned that it is now my turn to face Qisas (the Iranian regime's law of retribution). I am hurt as to why you did not let me know yourself that I have reached the last page of the book of my life. Don’t you think that I should know? You know how ashamed I am that you are sad. Why did you not take the chance for me to kiss your hand and that of dad? The world allowed me to live for 19 years. That ominous night it was I that should have been killed. My body would have been thrown in some corner of the city, and after a few days, the police would have taken you
