Oscar Pistorius 'sobbed himself to sleep' on first night in prison

Oscar Pistorius sobbed himself to sleep on his first night in
prison and is in shock over his incarceration, a South African
newspaper has reported.
Pistorius is being held in the hospital wing at Pretoria's Kgosi
Mampuru II prison, where since arriving on Tuesday he has
been under close supervision from nurses and guards,
according to South Africa's Times daily, citing unnamed
prison sources.
"Shortly after the door closed you could hear the tears. He
was torn up. Broken. The crying went on and on. We think he
stopped when he fell asleep. It was really bad," one source
told the newspaper.
Another source told the Times that Pistorius was still in
shock: "It gets everyone the first time, but he has the jitters
bad. He's really tense and stressed. The fact that he can't do
what he wants when he wants, and eat what he wants, is
hitting him hard."
Pistorius, convicted of manslaughter for shooting dead his
girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, was sentenced this week to five
years' imprisonment, though he could be released on house
arrest in as little as 10 months.

Pistorius' daily prison routine reportedly involves waking at
5.30am, breakfast at 7am, lunch at noon and supper at 4pm,
all in his cell.
South Africa's correctional services department refused to
comment on the report.

Zebilon Monama, the prison's area commissioner, earlier
described Pistorius as being "deurmekaar" – an Afrikaans
expression meaning confused, or bewildered – as he was
processed and placed in his cell.

Pistorius mistook Ms Steenkamp for an intruder when he fired
four shots through the lavatory door at his Pretoria home in
the early hours of Valentine's Day last year. Judge Thokozile
Masipa, who heard his case, found he had acted with gross
negligence.

State prosecutors, who objected to the judge dismissing a
charge of murder, have two weeks from sentencing to file an
appeal. In addition to his conviction for culpable homicide, as
manslaughter is known in South Africa, Pistorius was also
sentenced to three years in jail, suspended for five years, for firing a gun in a crowded Johannesburg restaurant in January 2013.

The 27-year-old athlete has been banned from competition for
five years by the International Paralympic Committee, meaning
he will be ineligible to compete at the 2016 Rio Paralympics.
South Africa's sports minister said on Wednesday that
Pistorius's sentencing for the killing of Ms Steenkamp marks
"the end of his journey" in international athletics.
Fikile Mbalula told the Cape Argus: "The courts have spoken
and we respect the decisions of the court. I hear people
saying that Pistorius will come back.

To me, that was the end of the road or maybe not."
